What to check before you buy a plantation

  1. Age of the palms. Ask when each block was planted. Age decides how long before the plantation bears in full and when it will need replanting.

  2. Harvest records. Ask for the last few months of harvest records, in tonnes of fresh fruit bunches (TBS) per hectare, and compare them with the age of the palms.

  3. Where the seedlings came from. Ask where the seedlings were sourced. Uncertified seedlings lower the yield for the whole life of the palm, and a photo cannot show it.

  4. Distance to the mill. Work out the distance to the nearest palm oil mill (PKS) and check the TBS price there. That distance sets the haulage cost and the price you actually receive. See today’s TBS prices.

  5. Papers and road. Make sure the land title is clear, for example a freehold title (SHM) or a cultivation right (HGU), and that a truck can get in during the rainy season.
